General Search Strategies: This site gives suggestions about which search engines and directories to use for specific searches.
Clusty: A metasearch engine that provides clustered search results. It searches Ask.com, Gigablast, MSN, NY Times, Open Directory, Shopzilla, Wikipedia, Wisenut, Yahoo!, and its sponsored listings.
Creative Commons Search: Not a search engine itself, this site lets the user do searches for web sites, video, audio, and images that have been licensed for public use.
Cuil: This search engine groups results by category for easier filtering, and provides video and streaming video results as well.
DMOZ Open Directory Project: This directory provides lots of categories, as well as entries in many different languages.
Exalead: This search engine has a user friendly interface, easy filtering and provides screen shots of the results.
Google Books: Use this site to search for books and magazines. Allows previews of most titles and full text for public domain titles.
Google Images: Google image search now lets users specify file size and usage rights in their searches.
Google Scholar: Use this site to search for scholarly material in journals and books. Includes citations, and sometimes full-text.
Internet Public Library: This directory has combined with the Librarians' Internet Index to provide annotated links to a wide variety of useful web sites
Truveo: This video search allows users a broad range of options for sorting results.
Voxalead News Search: Use this site to find current news video from a variety of sites
