Materials on Loan

Books

Borrower brings book to the front desk along with library card (if available) and has librarian scan card and book into system.

Librarian tells borrower the due date and borrower stamps date in back of book if desired.

Books circulate for 2 weeks for students, parents, alumni, info-pass holders, and interlibrary loan.

Books circulate for 4 weeks to faculty and staff. Books may be checked out over all holidays and vacations, including summer.

Periodicals

Current issues of periodicals may not be checked out; back issues may be checked out overnight and returned before 1st period of the next school day.

Quarterly or bimonthly periodicals that are still current may be checked out at the discretion of the librarian.

Reference materials

Reference materials do not generally leave the library.

Teachers may arrange to borrow a limited number of reference materials for their classrooms for a specific period of time.

Students may check out materials over the weekend at the discretion of the librarian; materials must be returned before 1st period Monday morning.

Reserve items (see also section on Reserve Materials Procedure)

Reserve items are generally shelved behind the front desk and are requested for reserve status by faculty member.

Materials classified as in-house reserve or permanent reserve may circulate for one period during the school day (or however long the borrower is in the library), materials designated as overnight reserve will be available for overnight checkout starting with the last two periods of the day.

Materials are due before 1st period the next school day.

Reserve materials may be placed on hold during the day if borrower signs and dates a hold card. The hold card is then clipped to the overnight card and placed in the pocket, indicating that the material is on hold. If the borrower does not show up to take the materials within fifteen minutes after school lets out for the day, it may be checked out to another borrower.

Media

Media includes VHS tapes, DVD recordings, audiocassettes, computer software, and other non-print items.

Media may be checked out for one week for all borrowers. That time may be extended for faculty upon request.

AV or computer hardware

Faculty and students may check out Audiovisual or computer hardware.

Students consult with the AV librarian and fill out a contract the first time they need to borrow equipment.

Faculty should call ahead to discuss their hardware needs and set-up requirement.

Equipment may be borrowed for extended periods at the discretion of the Director or the Media librarian.

Parents and alumni may not check out hardware unless for use at a Burroughs event and at the discretion of the Chair or the Media librarian.

Info-pass holders or interlibrary loan requests may not be made for library hardware.

Hardware may be checked out over holidays or during the summer at the discretion of the Library Chair or the Media Librarian.

Overdue Materials

Overdue notices for books, periodicals, AV software, and AV hardware are sent on a regular basis to students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. Notices for books are pulled from the system once a week, notices for AV software are pulled once a week, and notices for periodicals and AV hardware are pulled daily.

The library does not charge fines for late items in order to encourage the timely return or renewal of materials as well as insure that all students have equal access to the library's resources. However, borrowing privileges for students will be suspended if materials are not returned after three notices have been sent. The library does not bar borrowing privileges for faculty, staff, parents, and alumni.

Books:

Once a week individual notices are sent at lunch to students who have overdue books. Likewise, an individual notice is put in faculty mailboxes for the faculty member. These books may be renewed if nobody else has requested it by placing a hold on the item(s).

Students: After three overdue notices, a letter is sent home to parents stating the book(s) is overdue and the student has receive three overdue notices. It goes on to state that the family will be charged for the replacement cost of the book if it is not returned in 1 week. The cost of the book and a non-refundable $12 service charge will be sent to the business office to be billed to the student's account. If the book is returned, a credit will be issued provided that the book has not yet been reordered.

Faculty, staff, parents & alumni: If faculty, staff, parents, or alumni fail to return a book, that situation is handled on a case by case basis. If the book was checked out to the department, the department will be billed for the replacement. If a staff member does not return a book, his or her supervisor will be notified. Finally, the library will usually absorb the replacement cost for items that are never returned by this group of individuals.

Reserve and overnight materials:

Students must return these materials before 1st period of the day it is due. If the item is not returned, the student is sent a notice each day for three days. At that point, privileges are suspended and a letter is sent home along with a notice to the business office to charge the student.

Periodicals:

Students: Periodical notices are sent to students on a daily basis for three days at which point their privileges are suspended, a letter sent, and the business office notified.

Faculty, staff, parents & alumni: Periodical notices are sent to faculty, staff, and alumni on a weekly basis. Failure to return a periodical is handled on a case by case basis.

Media (e.g. audiocassettes, video tapes, DVDs, etc.):

Students: Media notices are sent on a weekly basis to students at lunch. Once three notices have been delivered, a letter is sent home, and if the item is not returned in 1 week, the business office is authorized to bill the student for the cost of the item along with a non-refundable $12 service charge.

Faculty, staff, parents & alumni: Media notices are sent to faculty, staff, parents and alumni on a weekly basis. Failure to return media is handled on a case by case basis.

Audiovisual hardware:

Students: Hardware notices are sent to student on a daily basis for three days at which point their privileges are suspended, a letter sent, and the business office notified. Since each student is required to sign a contract before borrowing equipment, this is usually not a problem.

Faculty, staff, parents & alumni: Hardware notices are sent to faculty, staff, and alumni on a weekly basis. Failure to return a piece of equipment is handled on a case by case basis. Hardware is not usually lent out to parents or alumni.
